working the numbers

Figures on a blackboardNumbers can be a great persuader. If you want to make a pitch based on extra profit or cost savings, it's great to be able to prove your point.

frequently-asked questions

If there's something I haven't explained clearly enough, forgotten to mention, or you think I might know the answer to, this page might be a good place to look. If you can't find the answer you need, please contact me and I'll be happy to focus my vast experience, didactic opinions and enormous ego to respond meaningfully.

can I buy Configurative as a shrink-wrapped software package?

No, that was never the intention. If you want to build everything yourself from scratch, use PowerPoint. I'm not so conceited as to believe I can design and build a software package that's beyond Microsoft's capability.

I designed Configurative to give you the ability to edit and manage content within a presentation we've built for you. It's intended to provide the flexibility to change things without breaking the design, brand and messaging integrity.

how much does a presentation cost?

That's definitely a piece of string question, but I'll try to give you a few ideas.

A straightforward, PowerPoint-type presentation (though looking a great deal better!) of around 20-30 slides is likely to work out at £1,500 - £2,500, whether we produce it in PowerPoint, Keynote or Configurative. A typical, moderately complex Configurative presentation - for example with interactive financial models or 3D animation is likely to be in the £7,500 - £15,000 range.

That said, we're capable and experienced in the big production arena too, with systems in use in the £25,000 - £120,000 band.

I realise I've just given you an impossibly wide price range, but I hope it gives you some feel. We'll always set and agree a budget with you before expecting you to commit to anything, so don't be afraid to get in touch and tell me your ideas.

who does what?

That's completely up to you. I have clients who pull me in to brainstorm how their presentation should hang together, and then build the actual pitch themselves. Others use their own design team and get us to build the presentation. And a great many leave the whole project to us.

The aim is to produce the result you're looking for, not be precious about who does what.

what software and hardware do I need?

Whatever presentation software you're using, be it Configurative, PowerPoint or Keynote, it'll run more smoothly and look better on a powerful machine than on some old rattler you've been using for years.

Our Configurative system is completely self-contained; it doesn't need any player or helper software. It runs on Windows from XP onwards or Macintosh from OSX onwards. Apart from the caveat at the top of this topic, it doesn't require any super-power hardware to run it. Any laptop or desktop machine less than 4-5 years old should do fine.

who owns the finished presentation?

You do.

In the case of a Configurative presentation we'll provide you with a self-contained executable application, along with the right to publish, copy and distribute it pretty much as you wish. You own the intellectual property rights and copyright to all of your content.

The actual software that runs it, be it PowerPoint, Keynote or Configurative, remains the intellectual property of the developer. So that's Microsoft, Apple or me respectively.
